The Next New Thing

If i have to suggest new type of new media that would be a social networking site just for Baruch college so that students can easily interact with each other. In addition, this particular social networking site must be mandatory to all the students and professors. Further more, all the assignments and projects should be posted by professors in this site so that student can easily access. Students will also post their assignments and projects in this site to their respective professors page. It will help to reduce the papers that we use for printing. Basically students will use this site as a social networking site and also for academic purpose.

Our Class Wiki- So Far

For our class wiki, i have been working on " How Business is Using Social Networking" topic. I am contributing my ideas in it. I have worked on the section called Disadvantage of social networking Era. I have also write my view about how the employee use social networking sites for recruting. Since my term paper was about Social networking, I gather a lot of information by researching it. I am planning to write more about how business is using social networking in up coming days.

P2P File Sharing

File sharing means sharing files in a network. It allows people to view the same file and allows them to modify,copy or print. P2P File sharing is a system of sharing files between network users without the interference of servers.  Some examples of P2P file sharing are Lime wire, Bittorrent and Kazaa. As in this article,"Valley View: File sharing joins the mainstream", it stated that BitTorrent has made possible the downloading of large files of copyrighted material such as movies and music for millions of users. So P2P file sharing like Bittorent has made easy to those people who love to watch movies in free.

Advice to Baruch

As a new employee to improve the Baruch college by using new media, i would like to use social networking tools.  I wish if the professors can use Facebook to interact with student. Facebook has been so popular among the students. It would be very helpful if professor create a group in Facebook and post discussion topics and assignments. By doing so almost all the students will take a look at it and it would be very beneficial for them.  It also creates strong relationship between professors and students.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Privacy and  confidentiality has been a great issue related to new media. New media like social networking sites have faced some privacy issues. The social networking sites like Facebook is been a platform for hackers to hack the information. Though Facebook has a privacy setting some people don't use them and got into trouble. In Facebook you can limit your information to your friends only. But some people don't do that and put up their information as viewed by everyone which creates a identity theft and like. Some bad peopl can crop the pictures from Faceook and put up in appropriate websites.

About my term research paper

My research paper topic is Social Networking: A purposeful loss of privacy. I did use internet, articles, newspapers and scholarly articles to research my paper. i found lot of things related to social networking. For instance, now i know that in India traffic officers are using facebook to find out who is violating the traffic law. I learned social networking has played a vital role in people's life. Social networking has been part of everybody's life. For instance, Facebook has now 750 million members. I did research on new media like Facebook, twitter and like.

Creativity

New media has played a vital role in our daily lives. Blogs, social networking sites are some of the new media. I think using blogs make us being creative. You can create your new ideas and post into blog or post it into social networking sites where you can share your new ideas with your friends. Furthermore you get feedback for your creative ideas.  You tube also has played an important role in creativity. People can post their funny home videos, can create their own music and post in you tube.  These websites like youtube helps people to be more creative than ever.

According to the article, “Disney tolerates a Rap parody of its Critters. But why?” it states that YouTube users are using clips of the cartoons and put them in a rap song. It generates more viewers and more feedback. This is how people are being creative using You Tube.

Modeling reality with Virtual worlds.

Virtual worlds can be used in many different ways.  People can use these virtual worlds to business, technology and entertainment. In business, it is used for training the employees. For instance IBM is using virtual world to train their employees. Virtual worlds help people to create their own world referring as second life. They used avatars to be whoever they want to be. In article, “ In room 100, Its Sid and Nancy all over again”, it stated that Mr, brown  had created a same exact place where Sid and Nancy of sex pistols were dead.  In another article, “Going to the virtual office in Second life”, it stated that more than 1400 organization including educational institution and US military are using Second life to conduct meetings and training.” A benefit of conducting meeting in Second life is that they save travel time. Employees don’t have to travel to be in meeting they just have to go in their second life and can perform it.

The major disadvantage of virtual worlds will be time consuming. Learning terminology and protocol can be sometimes time consuming. Also people might get addicted to the virtual worlds comparing to real worlds. People might dislike real world comparing to virtual world due to the flexibility and avatar that they have in their virtual world.

In future, virtual world will be applied in lot more areas. Lots of big companies will adapt to virtual world due to its benefits. It will be more closed to reality in near future.

Blog about Twitter

Twitter is a social media which helps us to share our views, interest, information with other people. We can follow celebrity, sport person, media person in twitter. We can know whats happening in their lives through twitter. Each tweets in twitter is 140 characters long. It is short but quite useful. Moreover, Twitter is also used by business people to advertise their products.


Twitter discussion is more efficient than the discussion in Blackboard and in-class discussion. Blackboard discussion is pretty much slow than of a Twitter. Twitter is more immediate response. Moreover, it is also mobile, so we can have discussion anywhere. For instance you can post a discussion while you are on street. But for blackboard you have to log in computer. Comparing to in-class discussion twitter is much time saving because we don't have to be in class to discuss, we just can post it on Twitter.

Social Networking Sites

Today, in this world of new media, social networking sites has played a major role in communication. People use social networking sites to communicate, to share information, pictures and many more. There are lot of social networking sites available. Among all those sites Facebook and Twitter have been way more popular than any other networking sites. Even, I started using Facebook like 5 years ago and have been loving it ever since. The other site like MySpace have limited features than the Facebook. So people usually prefer Facebook. In addition, the another networking site LinkedIn is more educational and professional.

Facebook is one of the greatest and largest social networking sites ever. The total number of Facebook users till date is approx 750 million. Facebook is generally used for sharing pictures, videos,views. It allows people to share their thoughts by updating their status. Moreover, it also can be a dating website, where people who have similar thoughts and likes can go out. In addition, Facebook is also used as a business purpose. The business people share the advertisement with the people through Facebook. Now you can  follow almost all kinds of business in Facebook. It helps us to keep updated of business products.

Twitter is another social media which helps us to share our views, interest, information with other people. You can follow celebrity, sport person, media person in twitter. MySpace is a social media where people can share their interest,photos and journals. It is a place where people can talk online. They can meet friends of the friends through my space. It helps us to connect more with friends. But these days there are only limited amount of MySpace users due to Facebook. MySpace was more popular before Facebook arrived.

Linkedin is a social media where professional people exchanged their ideas and knowledge. It is the largest professional network with more that 120 million users. It is more building professional relationship than connecting with the friends. It helps to manage our career by finding opportunities.

Overall, these networking sites Facebook comes in number one spot. Its user friendly, more popular, keep us updated about current news, helps us to be more socially active. Therefore, Facebook has been a perfect choice for me.

Social networking is a media where people share their information and activities.  It is a platform where people build their relationship through the website like facebook and twitter. Facebook has been a big example of social network. With the help of facebook companies advertise about their products and services. Moreover, twitter helps celebrities to connect with their fans. Celebrites post their daily activities on Twitter so fans can follow them. In addition Facebook is used as a bio-data in certain companies where employers used while hiring employees. As in this article in New York times,"Social networking technology boosts job recruiting" it quotes that  Social networking technology is absolutely the best thing to happen to recruiting-ever. Here in this article recruting expert Maureen Crawford Hentz is hiring employees through looking the Linkedin and it has been a great success. Another article in New York times, "In india, Using Facebook to catch scofflaw drivers", it mentions that with the help of Facebook, Delhi police has been to able to issue tickes to traffic violators. Generally, the police officers are posting the traffic violators photos in Facebook which help them to catch those traffic violators. 

Blogs vs wikis

Blogs are the individual posts and the wikis are done in group. Both blogs and wikis are new media that allows people to share the information. In blogs only the owner can edit and delete the information where as every user can edit and delete the information. Blogs is generally used to spread the news in their own words and wikis are generally used to do the group work. As in this article "Brooklyn blogs helps lead to drug raid" one blogger blogs that "Fighting and drug deals going down in the driveway of this house" which helps to catch the drug addicts. So blogs has also been helpful in finding criminals due to the blog post. In terms of wiki it is used in a different way. As in this article " How to use wikis for business" it writes that "The most well-know example of a wikis is wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that is written and maintained by, well, anybody who feels like it". So wikis is used in this manner.

Social Networking:A purposeful loss of privacy

Social networking has been so powerful and popular now. It helps us to keep in touch with our friends, family and relatives. We can be closer with them by social networking websites than a telephone. Apart form advantages these social networking sites have disadvantages too. The website like Facebook is used by companies to monitor the employee for unsuitable pictures and content. Many people don’t get a job because of their Facebook profile. In addition people are so careless that they don’t even use their privacy settings in order to prevent the identity theft. It has been a dangerous platform for identity theft.
